NaNoWriMo Update: Slow and Steady

3

After a week of writing on a story I’ve been working on for almost a year, I can already tell this NaNoWriMo is different than the last one.

I’m uncertain if that’s just the nature of a different story, or because I’m writing under pressure for a story that’s so dear to me (what I talked about in my last post). While last year I wrote in great swaths and then took minor breaks, this year I’ve written consistently almost every day in smaller sections. I’ve been really having to push myself to write every day. It’s a strangely novel feeling, deliberately setting aside and creating writing time, versus taking time I have available and writing for as long as I keep steam.

The first few days I struggled, partially due to my mood at the time, and partially due to the difficulty of the scene. But as the week progressed I’ve gained some momentum, and got ahead of the game where I could. Last night I ended up writing several hundred words beyond where I needed to be, but will try to continue that today.

Alright, I must be off to continue on this adventure.

I hope all of you are having fun and doing awesome! And hey, if you feel like it, come be my writing buddy!

  1. I feel that way, too. With my day job, I don’t get a chance to write at work, so I fantasize about what I will write when I get to those golden hours set aside for writing. The days when I only get a hundred or so words out suck, but I’ve had far more 1500-3000 word days, and I’m hopeful I can continue that for longer.

And I’m happy you stuck with your older project. Sometimes it’s hard to get over the middle part of a story and finish. I’ve definitely been there, and it sounds like you’re making good progress!

    • I pretty much spend my entire day fantasizing about when I can write. When people talk about a movie going on in your head, they aren’t kidding! While the ideas and the stories are nice, it does make it difficult to concentrate when I need to. Bah. (Glad I’m not the only one who does this)

Nice job with the 1500-3000 word days! So far, my biggest day has been a little over 2k… it’s hard to write big chunks on this story. Keep up the awesome work!

And yeah, I’m glad I stuck with it too. I’m learning so much about myself as a writer, as well, which is very helpful – and it’s always good practice. And yes, progress! Progress is wonderful!
